Tracks are generated live by the web browser in real time. They will play differently each time and vary sonically between browsers and devices.

Browser Support

Tracks are written in JavaScript using the Web Audio API to play and synthesize audio. Artwork is written in JavaScript and GLSL using THREE.js and the WebGL API. Below is a list of currently supported browsers in order of audio quality and functionality.

Continuous Playback

Some mobile devices pause tracks when the app is in the background or the screen is asleep. All mobile devices require the play button to be tapped to start each track. Desktop browsers allow autoplay but some—e.g. Safari—need permission. Below are some solutions for devices that don't play continuously:

iPhone

Navigate to "Settings" > "Display & Brightness" > "Auto-Lock"
Select "Never"*

Android

Navigate to the apps drawer > "Settings" > "Display" > "Advanced" > "Sleep"
Select "10 Minutes" or longer*

*Remember to return settings to normal to preserve battery and security.

Safari (desktop)

Navigate to "Safari" > "Settings for This Website..."
In the dialog that appears, under "Auto-Play", choose "Allow All Auto-Play"

Firefox (desktop)

If autoplay is disabled, there will be a symbol to the left of the URL next to the lock. Select the symbol
In the dialog that appears, navigate to "Permissions" > "Autoplay" and choose "Allow Audio and Video"

Offline Listening

This site can be installed as a web app, which works offline, loads faster and has a minimized interface. To install the web app:

Chrome (desktop)

Open the settings dropdown in the top right corner of the browser
Choose "Install Nth Child..."
Confirm the prompt

Chrome (Android)

A prompt to "Add Nth Child to Home screen" should appear automatically. If it doesn't or if it was dismissed:

Open the settings dropdown in the top right corner of the browser
Choose "Add to Home screen"
Confirm the prompt

Firefox (Android)

A prompt to add the app to the Home screen should appear automatically. If it doesn't or if it was dismissed:

Tap the icon in the top right of the browser that looks like a house with a plus sign inside
Choose "Add to homescreen"
Confirm the prompt

Safari (iOS)

Tap the share icon at the bottom of the screen
Choose "Add to Home Screen"
Confirm the prompt

Native App

A native app is in development for continuous and background playback on mobile devices.
